SACRIFICIAL VESSELS
An artist renowned for his technical glassmaking ability, in his “Sacrificial Vessels” Schunke reflects on his lifelong, unwavering dedication to develop a practice steeped in skill. In light of the loss of beloved mentor and glassmaker, Pino Signoretto, Schunke embraces mortality; and acknowledges the fragility of tradition and the depreciation of skilled work in contemporary artistic discourse. With these vessels, Schunke engages in a dialogue with a long history of accomplished glass-makers who challenged themselves to combine sculpted stems with blown goblet-making finesse. In a relentless display of knowledge and ability, Schunke deftly creates lidded vessels that recognize generations of technique, unite past and present, and memorialize traditional glass practice.
